To be eligible you must:

The Ministry of Community Safety and Correctional Services mandates a minimum 50-hour training program for the Private Investigator Course.  Content covered with the course includes:  Introduction to the Investigation Industry, Professionalism and Ethics, Health and Safety, Law and the Canadian Legal System, Use of Force, Investigations, Communications and Report Writing, Specialized Investigations, Business of Investigations.

Once you have successfully completed the course you will be able to register for the Private Investigator License Exam with the Training Completion Number provided to you. To register for the exam you can visit www.ontariosecuritytesting.ca and follow the prompts.

Once you receive confirmation of a passing grade on your exam approximately 5 business days after you write the exam, you can apply for your license online or by mail through the Ministry of Community Safety and Correctional Services website

If you apply online, you will be able to check the status of your application within two business days through your Service Ontario account. If you apply by mail, you can contact the Private Security and Investigative Services Program toll free at 1-866-767-7454 or [email protected]

You must have a valid license card to work as a private investigator. Working without a valid license is a violation of the Private Security and Investigative Services Act and may lead to charges. However, if you apply for a license through Service Ontario, you will be able to access a digital license through your online account as soon as your application is approved. This is considered a valid license so long as you print this document and carry it on your person while on duty.
